      St. George’s Day balloon release 23rd April 2010(April 26th, 2010)

On 23rd April 2010 our school celebrated St. George’s Day with our annual balloon race. Every member of the school released their balloon at 15.00 hours; approximately 900 red and white balloons left our school.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude for all those “near friends” who returned the postcard that was attached to the balloon. Our pupils were thrilled to discover how many cards were returned – thank you.

The big questions is: which balloon travelled the furthest? One of the balloons reached “Donau, Austria”. This means it could have landed anywhere along the banks of the River Danube, which rises in the Black Forest in Germany, slicing through northern Austria, Linz and Vienna before flowing into the Black Sea at Moldova. There is also a “Donaustadt” on the east side of the River Danube in Vienna. If this was the balloon’s landing site, then this is the balloon which travelled the furthest at 924 kilometres (according to googlemaps). We also had cards returned from Irnfritz, also in Austria, and Jersice in the Czech Republic.
