A-Level course
Sixth Form GCE-A-Level Curriculum
The New British Curriculum, introduced in 2008 brings with it a new style of examination structure.
This webpage provides you with details of the AS and A-Level courses available to you at St. George’s and the possible combinations to choose from.
You should consider the choice of subjects available carefully, and your general level of academic ability, in order to find the programme of study that will suit your individual needs. You will want to discuss your plans with your parents, your subject teachers, your form teachers and Head of Department.
The Head of Upper School will discuss your provisional choice of subjects with you individually, before they are finalised.
General Structure
- In all subjects the new A Level comprises of four or six modules, the first two/three at Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and the subsequent two/three at A Level (A2).
- Each module is assessed through examination and, in some subjects, through coursework.
- AS modules are assessed at a standard halfway to A Level and A2 assessments are at full A Level standard.
- The final A2 examinations contain a statutory synoptic element (minimum 20%) which assesses knowledge, understanding and skills gained throughout the course as a whole.
- The AS qualification counts as 50% of the full A Level and pupils may finish the course after two/three modules with certification at AS Level. Alternatively, pupils may continue the subject by studying the three A2 modules to gain the further 50% that makes up the full A Level qualification.
- Grades awarded at both AS and A2 will be A to E, with U as ungraded. Marks will be given for individual modules and modules can be retaken.
- Most module examinations are taken in June of each academic year. However some modules may be attempted in January, allowing successful candidates to focus upon a smaller number of examinations in the Summer.
- Particular to St. George’s is the fact that all pupils entering the sixth form must take part in an induction programme at the start of the course. In addition a ‘Thinking Skills’ course may be offered to all AS Pupils.
